It’s #MusicMondays! Check out our lesson pack, with a new song and activity to complete. We’d love to see yours.

This week the song is Galahad. Listen to it below and read the lyrics, can you imagine what a horse down the mine would look like? Have a look at the activity sheets, can you answer the questions and colour in the image of the miner and horse. Send us your completed pictures.

Galahad The song of the Driver, singing to his horse.

There’s fire in your eyes, you stand 16 hands high, you’d have made a fine sight in days long gone by. Saddle etched in silver, Livery sewn in gold, proud knight astride you as in legends we`re told. But your livery is mud, and your fine mane is shorn, You’ve scars down your back and your fetlocks are torn. Hauling the wagons through labyrinths of stone, hoof-sore and weary, and drenched to the bone.

Galahad, Galahad, the sight of you makes me so sad. When I think of what you might have had in the green world above, Oh,Galahad, oh, Galahad!

Three ton of ore in each tub you haul, then it`s back for the empties with no rest at all. From the judds to the sidings then you lead me way back, with no light to guide you along the dirt track. I shackle the tubs which make up each set then sprag down the inclines so nothing’s upset. The clanging of shovel echoes through the gloom then its “pull em out gadgy, another one’s done”. Galahad, Galahad, the sight of you makes me so sad. When I think of what you might have had in the green world above, Oh,Galahad, oh, Galahad!

Back to pit bottom, we’ve finished our load We’ve hauled ‘til we’re weary and not one “off the road” Choppy and Oats and a warm bed of peat, Mollasses and Bran Mash your once-a-week treat. For one week a year You’re allowed to be free, the sun stings your eyes, for a while you can’t see. Green grass tastes like nectar, fresh air smells divine, each moment precious ‘til you’re back down the mine. Galahad, Galahad, the sight of you makes me so sad. When I think of what you might have had in the green world above, Oh,Galahad, oh, Galahad!

We would like to thank Jim Barry for the song and lyrics.
