A miner's memorial to his father

This cross was made by William ‘Bill’ Garrett, aged 18 years. In memory of his father James Henry Garrett who died February 19th 1898, aged 47. Bill was only 13 when his father died, that was the age when he himself started work in Lumpsey mine. His only tools for the making of the cross were a file, nail and penknife. He worked underground for 55 years, retiring at 68 years old.
