Mines, Minerals & Men is a visual experience that delves into the relationship between geology, palaeontology, human ingenuity and curiosity.

This exhibition will take visitors on a voyage through time, starting with the formation of the planet, and leading on to examine the pioneering work of two local geologists, who revolutionised our understanding and identification of the Earth’s layers.

The ironstone mining industry played a big role in helping uncover the prehistoric secrets of East Cleveland and visitors to the museum can find out exactly how as part of their trip.

The exhibition should hold special interest for local people as it highlights the discoveries of the little-known Lewis Hunton, who was born in Loftus and was part of the Hunton alum family. He died at an early age in 1838 but this local figure was years ahead of his time and invented what we now call Biostratigraphy – a cornerstone of the science of geology.

Come and see the marvels of the ground beneath our feet - right in front of your eyes.

Admission to Mines, Minerals & Men is free with regular museum admission.
