The Rail Trail path follows the original route of one of the country's earliest railways, first opened in 1835 as a horse-drawn (later steam) line between Pickering, Grosmont, Goathland and Whitby.

Taking 2.5 hours to complete the distance of 3.5 miles, this scenic and delightful walk takes you through the main historic areas of ironstone mining within the Esk Valley. Best walked one way, with a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway between Grosmont and Goathland (https://www.nymr.co.uk/), the trail is clearly signposted throughout its full length.
