Timeline

  • 1830 to 1847 – Ironstone collected on the seashore .
  • 1848 – Skinningrove Mine started in the Maynard royalty.
  • 1865 – Cleveland Railway connects to Skinningrove via zigzag incline.
  • 1865 – Pease and Partners take control of both royalties and move mine site slightly to the South, to align with new railways. Now known as Loftus Mine.
  • 1871 – New South Drift started to allow increased output.
  • 1872 – Cooke’s ventilator in use.
  • 1880 – Skinningrove Iron Company works in Carlin How, begin to use Loftus stone via zigzag.
  • 1885 – Waddle fan ventilation introduced.
  • 1894 – Loftus mine connected directly to Skinningrove Ironworks via North Loftus shaft opposite mine.
  • 1899 – Ironstone from Grinkle transported underground, comes to surface via Loftus until 1914.
  • 1907 – Mine electrified.
  • 1911 – Electric Sirocco Fan introduced
  • 1934 – Mine connected directly to Skinningrove ironworks via aerial ropeway
  • 1947 – Skinningrove Iron Company take control when Pease and Partners collieries are nationalized.
  • 1958 – Production ends and mine closes.
  • 1983 – Tom Leonard Mining Museum opens on site.

The first underground working of ironstone in Cleveland was at Skinningrove in 1848 (years before Vaughans ‘discovery’ of ironstone at Eston)
