Ethel Emmerson’s Quilt

Ethel was the great-niece of Stephen Emmerson, The Miners’ Friend. Her first husband was killed at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Her second husband was a fitter in Skelton Mines.

In search of a new life

In 1926 during the economic depression, the couple set off to Chicago, taking with them only their clothes and this patriotic quilt. It later came into the ownership of Ethel’s granddaughter, Sharon Symons before being donated to the Museum.
