Harmonium

Music was an essential part of mining community life. Harmoniums were a popular alternative to organs and pianos in churches and village halls.

A long journey

This one is well travelled. It was built in Boston in the USA by the Smith American Organ Company about 150 years ago, and renovated in London in 1966. It had two owners in Middlesex, then came to Revd. Dr Drewery’s church in Yorkshire. In 2010 he gave it to Revd. Adam Gaunt, who in turn gifted it to the museum.
