What is in this case?

1. Bandsman’s uniform This belonged to James Arthur Stone. He played the cornet in Skinningrove Iron Works Band in the 1960s and helped start the Loftus School band.

2. Lingdale Silver Band uniform Lingdale Silver Band began in 1851 as Lingdale Ironstone Miners’ Band. This uniform belonged to Alan Chilton, who played drums and percussion in the 1960s.

3-4 Drum and Concertina Temperance Societies were set up to help encourage working men away from the dangers of drinking alcohol. Playing in a band was a reward for a sober life.

5 Skinningrove Silver Band The man on the far left in the middle row is George Thomas Martin. He kept the music scores organised but never actually played an instrument.

6 Brotton Brass Band The man in the bowler hat is Dr Caldwell. He was the first person to own a car in Brotton.

7 Skinningrove Silver Band in 1910 The band won first prize at Pickering Gala, on the edge of the North York Moors, in August 1910.

8 Skinningrove Village Band 1960s James Stone, whose uniform you can also see here, was leader of the village band in the 1960s.
