Gatherings and Galas

By the time Skinningrove’s mine closed in 1958, the Miners’ Institute on the seafront had fallen into disrepair. The villagers needed a new place for events, weddings and parties.

The Boatman’s Association was set up, and a Boatman’s Hut was built on Beach Road.

‘Children had weekly events called socials, with many getting their first kiss while playing Postman’s Knock there!’ Mr Hart, former Skinningrove resident.

Skinningrove Gala Day

Gala Day was a hugely popular annual event in the 1970s. The highlight was a parade, led by the Gala Queen.

Tug of war, fancy dress, knobbly knees contests and rowing races were held throughout the day.

The Gala Girls

A singing group, set up to raise funds for Gala Day, became hugely popular. The Gala Girls sang all over the north and won many competitions.

What is in this case?
